Love thy neighbor: Kol Shofar rabbi battling residents of Tiburon over facility's expansion

A feature from the Marin Independent Journal focuses on Rabbi Lavey Durey, the senior Rabbi at Congregation Kol Shofar, which is currently battling with the town of Tiburon California for the right to renovate their temple, a former middle school in an advanced state of decay.

"I know the work we do here is phenomenally good work," Derby said. "I'm not prepared to let people tell me we can't do it..."

Derby said he has been closely involved in the project, including the decision to cite federal religious freedom law.

"I'm the religious leader of this community and have been involved every step of the way of this," he said. "We raised RLUIPA when it became clear the town was not understanding the real issues at stake here. They were good at understanding neighbors, but they weren't understanding the religious institution's stake here.

"It's an issue of religious freedom, oh, without a doubt," the rabbi said.
